PRE-MENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER (PMDD)

Met up with my two favourite gals! - Dr Yap and Koh Pei Pei....and we're talking abt the above!......so girls, here's the story...

PMDD is a psychiatric condition that seriously weaks havoc on a woman's life. She's not just someone who gets a little more teary before her period. She's incapable of carrying out everyday activities or sustaining normal relationships wth people. In the US, est. 5% of the women suffers from this. In Singapore, a Dr Tan from Mount E Medical Centre sees abt 12 patients a yr for this and says that not many doctors are familiar with this condition.

Examples quoted by Her World Magazine:
1. Girl went berserk and punched boyfriend repeatedly. She didn't know what she was doing. She was overwhelmed with anger that she wanted to get rid of whatever was causing it. (Ok.....this is freaky - his blood splattered all over the dashboard and blood was running from his nose but she stopped only when her fist hurt!!)
2. When this girl got hit by PMDD, her confidence dips and she imagines that her colleagues and friends are looking down on her. Communicatin with others becomed such a chore that she'd rather just hope up at home and stay away from all social activities - even going to work where she has to mingle with her colleagues.
3. Two years ago, this lady got her first child. She thought it was the stress of being a new mum and trying to juggle a full-time job at the same time that caused her to become unhinged during PMS when she's extra-sensitive to her environment. She would burst into tears in the evenings after collecting her son from the babysitter's, and trying to do everything! She got overwhelmed by everything that she felt was going wrong in her life - the baby didn't seem to take to her very well, she was getting fat , her skin was bad, her hair was flat and everyone at work could see what a mess she was and was talking abt her and not respecting her. She started to take swipes at them for imagined personal sights and created a very tense environment at work. She even suspected her husband was having an affair bcoz of his late nites though he had been keeping late nites even before they were married. They quarreled and screamed to each other and when she felt she was not understood, she would resort to flingin whatever she had in her hand against the wall just to probe her point.

How to spot the difference between PMS and PMDD:
Both causes a change in eating habits, depression, irritability, anxiety, tension and hypersensitivity. The difference is that while it is normal for a PMS sufferer to cry easily when stressed and feel reluctant to go to work; a woman suffering from PMDD may actually feel so depressed that she is not even willing to get out of bed to go to work or care for her children. She loses interest in everyday activities and would rather spend an entire day in bed. Her mood swings are erratic and wild. She is crying and withdrawn one min, and venting her frustrations by flinging things around the next.

Like PMS, the symptoms usually disappear within the start of a period, and the woman's behaviour reverts to normal. If you think you are suffering from PMDD, you can seek help - call the Mount E Charter at 1800-7389595. PMDD can be treated with counseling, medication and support from family members (VERY important!!).

I know I do get "wild" PMSes but I really do hope that I'm not gonna be one of the 5% who gets this!.....Can't imagine myself hitting my dearie and throwing things!....So hope the above information helps for you girls out there!!... :)
